Overview

About 27,000 residents (2008) call Moorabool home. Most live in the main centres of Bacchus Marsh (45 kilometres west of Melbourne CBD) and Ballan (70 kilometres west of Melbourne CBD). Around 56% of residents commute outside of the Moorabool Shire for work, either by train or along the freeway. A significant number also travel in the opposite direction to Ballarat for work.

The three largest occupational groups are tradespeople and related workers, intermediate clerical, sales and service workers and professionals. The presence of a significant number of managers and administrators plus the strong presence of professionals and associate professionals provides a positive base for enterprise development, as does the high level of tradespeople and related workers which often operate their own business, particularly as home based operators.
