Upgrading of Anthony's Cutting

In the coming financial year, preliminary work will begin on improvements to Anthony's Cutting.  The Federal Government has allocated approximately $34m as the first level of funding for this Western Highway project as part of the current federal budget.  A further $130m of federal funds will follow over the next two years.

The Victorian Government will make its contribution through VicRoads.

This project is important for road users including interstate hauliers, travellers with trailers and caravans, and regular vehicles.  The Cutting has a serious reputation for traffic accidents, and news of the upgrade has been well received by emergency services that attended three crashes there in the past week.

Improvements to Anthony's Cutting will primarily focus on design and alignment of this section of road consistent with its major freeway route status, an outcome of which will be improved access and shorter travel time to Bacchus Marsh.  Given the cost of lives, this major upgrade also represents an investment in traffic safety as well as improved travel and road conditions.
