Tourism

Attractions come naturally to Moorabool and so do visitors. They come to marvel at the Shire’s wonders: Lerderderg Gorge, Werribee Gorge and Wombat State Forest. Furthermore they come to see the galleries, wander through charming towns, cruise a quiet back road, sample the mineral spring, hike a wilderness trail and attend a festival or two.

Moorabool is blessed with a range of natural attractions: from spectacular forests and vast gorges to health-giving mineral springs, dramatic landscapes with rolling hills – in stark contrast to the flat plains within Melbourne’s western region.

Major features of the Shire include:

  • Brisbane Ranges National Park
  • Lerderderg State Park
  • Lerderderg Gorge
  • Bungal State Forest
  • Lal Lal State Forest
  • Pyrite State Forest
  • Wombat State Forest
  • The Little Forest
  • Long Forest Nature Conservation Reserve
  • Werribee Gorge Park
  • Bostock Reservoir
  • Korweinguboora Reservoir
  • Lal Lal Reservoir
  • Merrimu Reservoir
  • Moorabool Reservoir
  • Pykes Creek Reservoir
  • Ballan Mineral Springs
  • Blackwood Mineral Springs
  • Bacchus Marsh Village Shopping Centre
  • Bacchanalia Estate Winery
  • St Anne’s Winery

Take a drive down the tree-lined Avenue of Honour at Bacchus Marsh, the perfect stepping-off point for the Lerderderg Gorge and Wombat State Forest. Stop off at a fruit stall to taste the produce grown in nearby orchards and market gardens. Round off your visit with a picnic beneath the trees in Maddingley Park.

As the Shire’s calendar of colourful events and festivals becomes even busier, the number of visitors to Moorabool increases. Arrive in February for the town’s Vintage Machinery and Vehicle Rally, or in March for the Ballan Autumn Festival, in Easter for the Blackwood Easter Carnival and in November for the Cup Day in the Park.

And at any time of the year, you can delve into one of the Shire’s regular markets.
