The last census period (2001-2006) continued to be one of substantial change in the employment base of Moorabool Shire. The most significant shifts in employment by industry sector included less reliance on employment in agriculture, forestry, fishing and mining, a higher proportion of jobs in wholesale and retail trade and higher percentage of work in construction jobs.

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Moorabool Shire in 2006 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

• Manufacturing (1,390 persons or 11.8%)
• Construction (1,245 persons or 10.6%)
• Health Care and Social Assistance (1,146 persons or 9.8%)

In combination these three industries employed 3,781 people in total or 32.2% of the employed resident population.

There is expected future demand for more industry and commercial establishments to locate in Moorabool Shire and there is sufficient land capacity to meet these demands.
